As we do from time to time, we put the usual preaching schedule on hold while we explore public theology together. We will again field questions from the congregation around the theme of things that cause us to doubt or to question.

It's Thanksgiving here in the US, but what does this mean for those of us who follow Jesus? How can we sit down and eat with both the wolf and the sheep? How much room is God making at this crowded table?

It’s Christ the King Sunday. What does this mean exactly? Why do we “celebrate” this day each year and what does it mean for us in the church to take a day to declare Christ’s kingship?

You can’t say that! Solomon’s temple was built to last... forever. Why in the world would Jesus say that not one stone will be left upon another? Fine, maybe we do need to do some renovating, some redecorating around the church. Maybe some adjustments to the constitution are in order, or perhaps it’s time even (God help us) for a new hymnal. Sounds like Jesus has something more radical in mind.

Sunday Nov 10, 2019
Every Sunday is a little Easter, Martin Luther once said. And it’s kind of fitting that this Sunday after All Saints Sunday, we have before us Jesus arguing with the religious leaders about resurrection. Don’t we all have these same questions about what happens in the Resurrected life? Let’s see how Jesus responds.

On this All Saints Sunday we will dwell in promises so rich and comforting that we need to keep hearing them spoken out loud. The pledge of our inheritance is signed, sealed and delivered and today we’re gonna read the fine print.

There Are Two Kinds of People... (Natalia Terfa 10/27/19)
Sunday Oct 27, 2019
Sunday Oct 27, 2019
Jesus uses a familiar trope to teach a lesson today. There are TWO kinds of people, and then definitely doesn’t hide which one is “better.” This choice before us is familiar, as we’ve been in Luke’s Gospel for almost a year, and this theme of self-aggrandizing is a recurring theme. So what does this mean for us today? Why does it matter?

When Your Past Catches Up (Chad Brekke 10/20/19)
Sunday Oct 20, 2019
Sunday Oct 20, 2019
What keeps you up at Night? Concerns about falling short as a parent, a friend, a Christian? Do financial worries keep you tossing and turning? Or maybe feelings of guilt or loss or shame? Jacob was terrified of his past catching up with him and one cold dark night it looked like his worst nightmare was about to come true. That’s when God showed up itching for a fight.

The Leper Who Said "Thanks" (Natalia Terfa 10/03/19)
Sunday Oct 13, 2019
Sunday Oct 13, 2019
Today’s Gospel is a familiar one, about the ten lepers healed by Jesus. We often hear this text read at Thanksgiving, as a reminder to “be like the one who says thank you” as if that’s the main point of this text. What if that’s NOT the point? What if this story illustrated something completely different?
