Things are happening. Everything is in motion. Crowds are on the move following Jesus into the next town. Except for Bart, as usual, he’s not going anywhere. He can’t even see the parade that is passing him by. Maybe you have felt this way, like the world is moving on without you. But then Jesus stopped everything and stood still. That’s when everything turned around.

The excitement around Jesus is growing. The disciples’ visions of grandeur is growing as well. A few of them are feeling pretty good about their prospects, so one day they decide to let Jesus know their big plans, and score a little something for themselves while they’re at it. Seems like a good idea, right? Maybe not. Jesus immediately sets them straight, and sets himself, the disciples and the rest of us in a different direction...

Oh the lies we tell ourselves! Pr Chad preached on Hebrews 4 at our Rally Day, reminding us that sometimes Scripture cuts as it brings good news. And today we have some of these very verses - where Jesus’ words push right up against the things we hold dear - money, power, and position. How difficult it is to hear these words!

Each of us has been affected by divorce in one way or another, either directly or indirectly. I have heard many sad and troubling stories over the years from people who felt tossed aside by the church after experiencing divorce. Can we find some grace in what sound like harsh words from Jesus about divorce in this passage?

Oooh boy can we relate to the disciples today. We too have an idea of the way things are “supposed to be” and we have a hard time when something goes outside of this idea. But what if we are working in different ways but for the same outcome? Does it matter how this work gets done? Let’s see together.

Ever had a burning question about something that you were afraid to ask? In today’s gospel reading the disciples really don’t get what Jesus is talking about but after the public scolding Peter just received, they all just bite their tongues. Turns out that asking their questions would have been a good idea after all.

As we kick off our fall season of ministry we pause to consider the gift of God’s Word. We teach it and preach it and study it. We embrace it, ignore it, treasure and fear it. God’s Word is living and active and sharp!

So today Jesus tells the disciples that it’s not what you put into yourself that matters, but what comes out. And honestly, that has often been used to tell people to “smile more” or “be happy” or other baloney feel good spirituality. What if this text wasn’t about your emotions, but how you treat others?

Today we wrap up our 7 week series on Ephesians. In this famous passage it may sound like we are sent into the world to do battle. In one long military metaphor, we are told to “put on the armor of God.” As usual however, a closer look reveals a deeper truth, our only weapon brings life, even to our enemies!
Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-20
